A Recipe For Getting Out Of Your Own Way

I’ve got a technique for you today that might just change your life…

Ok, that’s a pretty big call, but used correctly, for the right goal, it could be the difference between success and failure in something that means the world to you.

We all have goals or things we want to achieve and these things will sit wherever you put them on our ladder of priorities. I’m sure you can think of a particular goal though that you would REALLY love to achieve, but for some reason it seems to keep eluding you or never seems to get any closer. It might be losing weight, completing your first marathon, running a PB or something completely different like writing a book. Whatever the goal is, here is a way you can achieve it.

The process – you will need three pieces of paper:

Step 1 – Write down your ultimate goal on the first bit of paper, AND WHY this is a goal of yours. Be very specific with the details of the goal and describe exactly WHY you want to achieve it and how it will make you feel or what it will do for you.

Step 2 – On the second bit of paper write down every conceivable reason why you haven’t yet achieved your goal. Reasons such as lack of time, not enough energy, too many distractions at home or work, your kids require all your attention, it will cost too much, your body keeps getting injured, etc, etc…

Step 3 – Imagine you are a close friend of yours that knows you very well. Using the list created in step 2, read each point and write on the third bit of paper, suggestions on how to overcome each problem listed. If you get stuck, simply ask the question “If achieving this goal was of the highest priority, what could I do to find a way around this particular issue?”. You need to have a suggestion or an idea for each problem, so that the problem is removed or at least decreased.

You will probably be surprised by what you come up with.

Step 4 – Line up each piece of paper in front of you, with number 2 in the middle.

Step 5 – Reach out and grab the second piece of paper, scrunch it up and throw it behind you. What you are now left with is your Ultimate Goal with a very clear indication of why it is important and the benefits it will bring. Next to it is a set of very clear instructions on how to create the perfect situation where your goal can become a reality. There are no longer any excuses for not achieving it, only reasons for having it and directions on how to make it happen.

Sounds simple right? Well it kind of is…

We are so often responsible for getting in our own way when it comes to achieving what we want in life. Sometimes we hold ourselves back and don’t even know we are doing it. It may be the self-talk we use, or perhaps we make the hurdles out to be bigger than they actually are. When it comes down to it though, we all have the ability and the answers within us, to get what we want. Sometimes we just need to get out of the way so that it can happen.

Dream big. Make it happen.

Run long,

Shaun Brewster.
