It makes you draw a breath that smells, tastes and feels different. These stories can come and go, passing through your awareness and then forgotten; but if you take a moment to think about what it means, it may just change your life.
This story is about Kayla.
Kayla is a normal teenage girl from a normal American town with mindset that is far from normal.
You see, Kayla has Multiple Sclerosis. A disease that slowly strips you of your ability to move or function in any kind of normal way. Kayla’s response to her diagnosis was to take up running and to run as fast as she possibly can for as long as her body will allow. The thing is, as her body temperature begins to rise, it shuts down her ability to feel her legs. She runs but can’t feel anything… though when she crosses the finish line, she collapses in enormous distress – EVERY TIME SHE RUNS.
To toe that line every day for training and for every race she runs, takes courage and determination beyond anything most of us could ever imagine.
We MUST NEVER take anything for granted. Our ability to do the things we love is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. It is what nourishes our souls and makes us the people we are.
Next time you can’t decide if you can be bothered getting up and doing something important, or something that will make you a better version of yourself, remember Kayla and what it takes for her to do what she does.
Watch this video and put yourself in her shoes. In the shoes of her parents and the shoes of her coach. When the video ends, you will be different.
